Serving Encinitas and Mammoth Lakes, CA
No one has a perfect smile. We all have flaws here or there, like a misshapen tooth, a minor gap between teeth, or teeth that could be stained from a reaction to tetracycline as a kid. Porcelain veneers are a beautiful way to correct these cosmetic flaws without resorting to crowns or orthodontics. Dr. Comfort can transform your smile with veneers in as little as 2 appointments at his Encinitas or Mammoth Lakes offices.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin porcelain shells placed over the front surfaces of your natural teeth to correct various cosmetic problems. Dr. Comfort uses only porcelain for veneers because its appearance closely resembles that of natural tooth enamel.
What aesthetic problems does Dr. Comfort use veneers to address?
Veneers are the ultimate restoration for:
- Revitalizing the surface of a tooth
- Concealing chips
- Covering badly stained or discolored teeth
- Closing gaps between teeth
- Masking alignment problems
- Covering cracks or wear
- Providing an alternative to orthodontic work
It’s important to note that porcelain veneers are only a cosmetic solution and are applied atop healthy teeth. Issues such as decay or gum disease must be taken care of before veneers are applied.
How are porcelain veneers applied?
Porcelain veneers require two appointments with Dr. Comfort. First, there is a thorough cleaning of your teeth. If you are not having all your visible teeth covered with veneers, we may whiten your teeth first to remove stains. Dr. Comfort then uses a shade guide to determine the porcelain color to match your adjacent teeth.
To prepare your teeth for the veneers, Dr. Comfort shaves a tiny amount of the enamel from the front of the teeth (from 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm). This makes room for the veneers on the front side of each tooth. When this process is complete, we take impressions of the teeth and send these off to the dental lab for the fabrication of the custom veneers. While they are being made, we place temporary veneers to protect the teeth.
When the veneers are finished the patient will return for a second appointment. Dr. Comfort checks the fit and the color match of each veneer. Once satisfied, the porcelain veneers are permanently cemented onto the teeth, and the patient can show their new smile off to the world.
How long will my veneers last?
A set of porcelain veneers can last from seven to 20 years. Their longevity is usually tied to the health of the teeth holding the veneers. You do need to remember that this is a permanent procedure. Because we remove some enamel, your teeth will always need to be covered with veneers. So, when a set reaches its lifespan, you’ll need to have a new set placed.
